Drinking water

Catchment

Catchment systems are Drinking water collecting devices that can harvest water:
  • either from surface water;
  • or from ground water intakes (deep wells for example).

Surface water is harvested via water collection structures.
Ground water can be harvest by using a well equipped with a submersible pump (submerged motor) or a pump on a shaft with the motor at the surface.

The selection of the equipment is based on your specific project constraints and requirements.

The treatment of drinking water

The type of treatment to apply to the water to make it safe to drink depends of the raw quality of the water to treat. (hardness, turbidity,…)

Undesirable elements such as total suspended solids (TSS), iron, manganese, nitrates, pesticides, sulphates, salts, pathogens, taste or odours, etc. should be removed via a specific treatment process.

Several steps are usually necessary to make water drinkable and different technics can be implemented according to the problems encountered:
  • Physical-chemical treatments
  • Settling
  • Sand Filtration
  • Activated carbon filtration
  • Ion exchange resins
  • Remineralization via a neutralizing mass
  • Chemical disinfection
  • Ultraviolet disinfection
  • Treatment using membrane techniques (nanofiltration, reverse osmosis)
  • Disinfection via ultrafiltration
Pumping for transfer or overpressure

Pumping is necessary to transfer the water:
  • From catchment areas to processing plants,
  • From catchment areas or treatment plants to reservoirs or water towers.

To increase the pressure available, it is often necessary to use booster pumps.
These pumps can be operated at a fixed or variable speed (Via a speed controller)
